Ghana

Ghana officially the Republic of Ghana is a country located on the West Africa along Gulf of Guinea and Atlantic Ocean. The country is bordered by Burkina Faso in the north, Ivory Coast in the west, Togo in the east and the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Guinea in the west. Ghana is 33rd largest country of continental Africa. Population of Ghana is 24 million as recorded in 2010. Ghana is 5th most stable country, 7th best governed country and thirteen most developed country of continental Africa. Ghana is the first country of Africa to declare independence from European colonization and thus made a significant influence on other African Nations struggling for independence.  Ghana independence made a great influence on African movement such as “black pride” and “Pan African” movement in United States of America. Ghana is the largest producer of cocoa in the world and it is also one of the largest producer of gold and diamond in Africa.

 Earlier residents of Ghana were Akan’s people of the Kingdom of Ashanti. The Kingdom of Ashanti was a great power and highly disciplined society in those ages. Akan began trade relation with Portuguese during the 15th century. Portuguese developed their Gold coast in the Elmina city and focused largely on the trade of gold between the Akan people. Portuguese influence in the region increases in the late 15th century as King John II of Portugal commissioned his commander Diogo d'Azambuja to build Elmina castle. In 16th century Dutch Joined in the race of gold trade along with Portugal as they established Dutch Gold Coast and build forts at Kormantsi and Komeda. Later on many other European nation including Swedish, Danish, Dutch and German established several gold coasts in many parts of Ghana. Britain developed their colonies after defeating Kingdom of Ashanti in the War of Golden Stools.

Geography of Ghana include many eco-systems including forests, savannahs, rivers, lakes, low hills and islands at the coast of Atlantic Ocean. Ghana economy is largely base on Oil and petroleum industry, mining, agriculture and tourism.
